What is a biodiverse green roof?
A standard green roof consists mainly of strong succulents (sedums) that require little maintenance. A biodiverse green roof is more than just sedums. It also contains flowering herbs, native flowers and sometimes ornamental grasses. Those additional species provide:
More color – green roof with flowers
More food – nectar and pollen, a green roof for bees and butterflies.
More resilience – greater variation means a healthier and stronger ecosystem.
In short: your roof becomes a real biotope. All the advantages of a classic green roof also remain. Think insulation, water buffering and longer life of the roofing material.
Can a biodiverse roof on a pitched roof?
Yes, but only if the slope is no steeper than 20 degrees. All of our biodiversity packages are suitable for flat roofs and slight slopes up to a maximum of 20°.
Is your roof steeper than that? Then, unfortunately, a standard sedum roof package is not an option.

Maintenance of a biodiverse green roof
Water & nutrition
Extra water or nutrition is usually not necessary. Too much nutrition stimulates the growth of grasses, which actually crowds out flowers and herbs. Only in extreme drought is it good to water once a week for an hour.

Mowing
To maintain the right plant composition, mowing is essential – but at the right time.
In any case, mow in September: by then most of the bees will have flowered.
Optional: additional mowing in June to suppress grasses and give flowers more space.
First year: June and September mowing.
Preferably leave the roof unmowed from December through July.
Phased mowing
Mowing? Do it in phases. Always leave 15-30% of the roof unmowed and mow the rest 2-3 weeks later. This way there will always be shelter and food for insects.
Cutting height & tools
Start with a height of 5-7.5 cm at the first mowing.
For small roofs, use a brush cutter; for large roofs, beam mowers or wheel mowers are best.
After mowing: remove cut greens within 4 days to keep nutrition balanced.
