Improve biodiversity
with green roofs for
bees and butterflies
In recent years, bees and butterflies have had an increasingly difficult time due to climate change, pollution and loss of their natural habitat. In fact, 2023 was the worst year of butterflies ever recorded. These pollinators are essential to our ecosystem and food production. Fortunately, there is an effective way to support their populations: the green roof.
Why is sedum good for bees and butterflies?
Sedum is good for bees and butterflies because it provides an excellent source of nectar and pollen, which are essential for their feeding and survival. Sedum plants bloom throughout several seasons, ensuring a constant food supply. In addition, green roofs create a safe habitat where bees and butterflies can rest, shelter and reproduce. These green roofs promote biodiversity and aid in temperature regulation, contributing to the health and stability of bee and butterfly populations.
All the benefits of a green roof for butterflies and bees
-
Food Source Sedum roofs provide a constant food source for bees and butterflies. The succulents bloom throughout different seasons and provide nectar and pollen, essential for the survival of these insects.
-
Habitat Sedum roofs create a safe haven for bees and butterflies. In urban areas where natural habitats are often lacking, green roofs provide a place for these insects to rest, breed and shelter from predators and adverse weather conditions.
-
Biodiversity Installing green roofs promotes biodiversity. This creates a healthier and more robust ecosystem. Diverse plant growth attracts different species of bees and butterflies, contributing to the stability of their populations.
-
Climate regulation Sedum green roofs help regulate temperature by cooling the environment. This is especially important during hot summers, when bees and butterflies are more vulnerable to heat. The cooler micro-environment of a green roof can significantly increase their chances of survival.
- Water Management Sedum roofs can absorb large amounts of rainwater, which helps reduce flooding. This is beneficial for maintaining stable habitat for bees and butterflies, as flash floods can destroy their habitats
What is a green roof?
A green roof is a green roof composed primarily of sedum plants, a type of succulent plant known for its ability to survive in extreme conditions. Sedum plants are low maintenance and can handle drought well, making them ideal for roofs. They come in different types and colors, making for a colorful and varied roof. Sedumworld offers several green roof packages. Both lightweight packages and biodiverse packages.
Other benefits of a green roof
Sedum is not only good for biodiversity but has many other eco-friendly benefits!
- Energy efficiency: Sedum roofs insulate buildings better, which can lead to lower energy costs for heating and cooling.
- Air quality: Green roofs improve air quality by absorbing CO2 and releasing oxygen.
- Roof life: A green roof protects the roofing material from UV radiation and extreme temperatures, which significantly extends the life of the roof.
Frequently Asked Questions
We assume that if two adults can stand on the roof, the roof is strong enough for our lightweight system, this system weighs only 45 kg/m2 saturated and is therefore suitable for almost all roofs around the house. However, this is not a guarantee. If you want to be sure, we recommend that you hire a structural engineer to check the roof.
A green roof has both ecological and economic benefits. Check out our page for this here.
After delivery, you can store the sedum mats rolled up for up to two days in cold weather. In warm weather, a maximum of one day. It is important to store sedum mats in a cool, dry place, directly out of the sun. You can also temporarily unroll and water the mats if you can’t handle them right away.
